The Hallowell granite company was founded in 1866, and was one of the first manufacturing production lines in north America. the buildings were in poor condition when Claudia Brahms and Noel Mount moved into the old office building in 1983 and began a restoration project and business adventure that has gained national recognition.Brahms Mount is a careful blend of both the art and science involved in creating tactile, heirloom textile fabrics. Claudia and Noel have diligently cultivated these skills for twenty three years. Well prepared with extensive backgrounds in Textile manufacturing and design, they know that you cannot simply lay yarns together side by side and hope that the fabric produced will have tactile appeal, lasting value and be correct for the application chosen. The art is involved with the design and the choice of ingredients, and the science is in the way they are combined together into a textile that will be ideal for the use it was intended.They chose the more difficult adventure and created a product line that they could weave, package and sell under their own label, Brahms Mount Textiles. Noel found antique Crompton and Knowles W3 shuttle looms in closed mills and in scrap yards in Rhode Island and set to work to restore them. Claudia hand wove fabric constructions to create their first products.
