At one time, it was estimated that the number of persons with mental illness in Topeka was at least twice what you would expect to find in a city of this size. While that number may have decreased with the departure of the Menninger Clinic, there are indicators that the population is still a significant one. In 2007 alone, the three agencies providing public mental health services in Shawnee County served over 13,000 people.

Our mission is to empower individuals with mental illness to function more independently in their social, living, and working environments and to secure decent, safe, and affordable housing for them in Shawnee County. The people we serve are on a journey toward recovery from mental illness. Our philosophy is to meet them where they are, to accept them as they are, and to walk side-by-side with them on that journey—supporting them, empowering them, working in partnership with them to achieve their goals for independence and employment.

It is contributions from individuals like you that give Breakthrough House, Inc. the flexibility to provide the wide range of services we currently offer. Many of these are services that the people who come to us benefit from the most.
