The origins of the Brookfield Historical Society started forty years ago in February 1968 at a casual meeting in the home of Samuel S. Walker, Jr. along with the Editor of the Brookfield Journal, Newell Rogers. Muriel Davis, the memorable Librarian at the old Joyce Memorial Library, today our Museum, had instigated the meeting noting that Sam Walker was a staunch historian. By March of 1968 the organizing committee had grown to 36 historically minded people from all facets of Brookfield. What I am so proud of, is that Sam Walker felt then that the keynote for the Society should be “preservation of the past in order to serve the future.” Here we are, 40 years later, and that is exactly the Society’s main focus. As a volunteer, nonprofit entity, we rely on the services of a dedicated group of exceptionally gifted individuals working on your behalf. We are supported financially through membership dues and modest fund-raisers. The combination of volunteers and a growing awareness of our community involvement has been the hallmark of our continued success. We invite you to browse our website. We encourage you to visit our Museum and Gardens. We will fascinate you as you use our library, or various research facilities and records. And, we ask that you become a supporting member and join us in our important work for you and our Town. As President I never allow myself to miss the opportunity - If you have items, documents, photos or even stories that relate to Brookfield, please contact us! Thanks to a grant from the Albert and Helen Meserve Foundation we have the means to recreate, record and preserve even the most fragile and light sensitive item. Additionally, we are a 501(c) (3) tax exempt organization. I encourage you to thoughtfully consider the Museum and Historical Society as an important part of your charitable planning.
