During his visit to Dayton in 1925 for the Scopes Evolution Trial, William Jennings Bryan (1860‑1925) expressed the wish that a prep school and junior college for men might be established on one of Dayton’s scenic hills.on July 26, 1925, the Bryan Memorial University Association launched a national campaign to raise five million dollars, half for endowment and half for buildings. A wooded hilltop tract overlookingwas obtained and construction began with high enthusiasm for the new institution. The immediate and continuing effect of the Depression caused the collapse of the fund‑raising effort and the consequent halt to construction.
