Description

The concept of the Carter Burden Center for the Aging began in the early seventies. City Councilman Carter Burden recognized a very great need that was not being met in his district - Manhattan's Upper East Side. Countless frail and elderly who had contributed to the community their whole lives now needed help in order to remain in their apartments and continue to participate in the life of their neighborhood. In 1971 he addressed this need by creating a position for one social worker that worked solely with the seniors in his district. Now with a $3.1 million dollar budget and a staff of forty, the Center Burden Center Center for the Aging Inc., serves thousands of people each year.
