The Bush Foundation invests in great ideas and people who power them. Looking back, this has been the case since the Foundation was founded in 1953. The specific initiatives, programs and tactics may have changed and evolved, but the work has always been rooted in the organizations and people who think bigger and think differently about solutions to problems in their communities. Intentionally broad from the beginning, Archibald and Edyth Bush set up the Foundation to fund and be “operated exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, literary or educational purposes, including encouragement of art.” This open-ended approach, though a source of some complication following Archie’s death, has ultimately set the stage for some of the Foundation’s most influential work. Our first president following the death of Archie was Humphrey Doermann. Leading the Foundation from 1971 to 1997, he was a major force in establishing a state-of-the-art grantmaking process based on due diligences and consultation, for which the Foundation is known.

Independent Sector - The Bush Foundation is a member of Independent Sector, a national membership organization that encourages giving, volunteering, not-for-profit initiatives and citizen action. The site contains information about public policy, research, charity lobbying in the public interest and public education. The Minnesota Council on Foundations - The Council is a regional membership association of grantmakers dedicated to strengthening organized philanthropy. The site contains many helpful resources, including weekly online grantmaking news, grantmaking trends and analysis, and links to other organizations providing information about philanthropy and nonprofits.

We provide a limited number of grants each year directly to tribal governments to support their efforts to strengthen their governing systems.and the password contained in the confirmation email you received when you created your account. For grants from $500 - $10,000 We partner with the Headwaters Foundation for Justice (MN), The Consensus Council (ND) and the South Dakota Community Foundation (SD) to provide Community Innovation Grants for projects with budgets of $500 - $10,000. The program content and criteria for these grants is the same as the Community Innovation Grants offered here at the Bush Foundation. Applications are reviewed quarterly by each of our partner organizations. Interested applicants can apply directly to the state program most applicable for their project using the links above.
