Our open source culture attracts leading developers (including a core committer of Django!) and staff who love sharing ideas. To keep ourselves sharp and in tune with the open source community, we provide resources for our team to attend conferences and events, share and contribute code to the open source community via GitHub, and pursue training. We also all contribute new open source projects to the greater community during quarterly ShipIt Day, a day dedicated to creating projects that are just plain fun.

In order to find a vendor, UNICEF turned to mobile messaging companies within the development field who, in turn, often turn to us. We fill a unique niche as Django/Python specialists, the framework and language that forms RapidSMS. RapidSMS is the framework for messaging applications used by UNICEF and certain other international groups. We traveled to Zambia and Malawi with UNICEF staff and local developers. Our mission was two-fold: to work closely with rural clinicians to build impactful applications and to train the local developers in RapidSMS. Once we left, the local developers would be able to sustain the applications and, potentially, build new ones to service their community.
