Description
Finally on Thursday, December 17th, 2009 we were able to hear Raymond Dobard, co-author of "Hidden In Plain View", speak at our library in Prince Frederick. He was originally supposed to speak in October, however cancelled due to illness. His book on the topic of quilts and the Underground Railroad was written in 1999. In the quilt history world we have found errors and problems in the information that he and co-author Jackie Tobin had presented. The best information that I gleaned from his lecture is that he admits to errors and realizes that the book has problems. I asked him if he felt that his text should be on the "Fiction" shelf or the "Non-fiction" shelf of our library. His answer: "I think it should be in between, but more in the non-fiction, because there are facts in here. There are portions in this book that are definitely non-fiction, but we don't know everything about Ozella (Williams - the lady who gave the oral history of the "quilt code" to Jackie Tobin)."
