He was a crossover artists long before that term was coined. His career began in 1927, when radio was in its infancy. In the 1930s when “talkies” evolved, Hollywood beckoned. But from the very beginning his goal was opera, and in 1942 he made it to the Met. When television became a reality in the fifties, he conquered that medium too. All the while, he was making records and traveling the country concertizing. James Melton loved to sing –- and he sang to make his listeners happy. In his concerts as well as on radio and television, his selection of music was wide ranging –- from high-toned art songs to popular music, from opera arias to cowboy songs. There was something for everyone. He was there to entertain, not to educate. He truly felt entertainment was an art.
