CancerInfoNet.org is part of a Web-based training program created by the Cancer Information Service (CIS) of New York and funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) to teach consumers and healthcare professionals how to access information on the Internet to learn more about cancer. As part of the "Bridging the Digital Divide Project: Your Access to Cancer Information," our Web site was created to provide a tailored, easy-to-use interface to credible, trustworthy cancer resources and promote the Internet as a way to locate this information. The Digital Divide Project was implemented through a partnership between the CIS and five community-based organizations in Harlem: the Harlem YMCA, the New York Urban League, Playing 2 Win's Harlem Community Computing Center, Verizon Education and Technology Center, and North General Hospital. Free, 1-hour, hands-on workshops, in English and Spanish, were offered to consumers and health care professionals at the computer centers of these organizations. When our project was completed in October 2001, CancerInfoNet.org was adapted for the independent use of individuals or groups.
