Description
Founded in 1951 by Ray and Mary Boley in Phoenix, Arizona, Canyon Records was the first recording company to market Native American music to Native American people. Ray Boley's involvement with Native American music began when he was asked by the Phoenix Little Theater to record a Navajo singer named Ed Lee Natay for a play the troupe was producing. Boley was so taken with Natay's singing that he recorded some songs for release on record. Natay, Navajo Singer was well received and stimulated Boley's enthusiasm for Native American music. The Boleys began spending their vacations seeking out Native American singers and musicians.By 1971, what had begun as a subsidiary to their film company turned into the couple's full-time business and they spent weeks at a time on the road seeking out new artists from many tribes.
