Description

CapMed continues to be a leader in Personal Health Records (PHRs), developing one of the first PHR applications in the mid-90's. The organization was founded by two doctors in Huntsville, Alabama in 1992. Ira Denton, M.D., and his wife Judy Denton began the development of a computer-based patient medical records software system. They felt that "completing the information circle" among doctors and patients would be essential to shared decision-making and mature relationships among patients and their care teams. They integrated the system into Dr. Denton's neurosurgical office in 1991 with remarkable results, and went on to found CapMed in 1992. CapMed made the shift from its physician clinical record system to focus on personal health management in the late 1990s.In 2002, CapMed launched the first-ever patent-pending Personal HealthKey™ for secure portability of health information on a key chain using USB flash disk technology. CapMed was subsequently acquired by Bio-Imaging Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: BITI), becoming the cornerstone of Bio-Imaging's personal health management solutions division.CapMed continues to be an innovator in personal health management solutions, addressing patient privacy concerns with tangible solutions that engage patients and enable interoperability. CapMed's solutions have been showcased as a means to help patients gather information through electronic transfer from multiple providers, to upload information from home-monitoring devices, to record and track all types of information to lab values and excercise regiments to medications and medical images; as a means to exchange this information with electronic provider systems using a secure online exchange; and as a means of point-of-care through the ubiquitous USB port (patient-chauffeur model). To date, more than 500,000 Personal Health Records and Personal HealthKeys have been distributed through partnerships with hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, managed care organizations, employers and OEM partners.
