Description

Capital Camps was founded in 1987, with it's first summer season in 1988. The agency was born as the result of a UJA camp planning committee in July 1985. This group concluded that successful Jewish camps have a lasting and positive impact on the lives of campers and their community. In summary, they agreed that professionals with Jewish camping experience can take the lead in translating these goals into reality; moreover, they agreed that it would require the support of a broad spectrum of existing Jewish organizations and a commitment by community leadership to ensure the success of the camp.Capital Camps & Retreat Center is an independent non-profit organization (501C). The camp is a Beneficiary agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington, an American Camping Association (ACA) accredited camp and a member agency of the JCC Association. The main purpose of the camp is to provide a summer camp program for children and retreat opportunities to the Jewish community. The camp is located in Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, and the winter offices are located in Rockville, Maryland with close ties to both the Baltimore and Northern Virginia communities. Our goals as an agency have not changed over the years, even as the camping and retreat industry has become more sophisticated and demanding. We are committed to informal Jewish education via a fun, meaningful and nurturing experience – with the long term outcome being one of maintaining and enhancing Jewish identity and therefore community vitality and vibrancy.
