Many of us reflected on 2009 as the seconds ticked away, thinking about our goals. Some goals were met, some weren’t. Some of the goals have since been reevaluated and don’t even seem so important any more. While most goals are self-oriented, most of us have a special place in our hearts carved out for goals outside of ourselves. Things we’d like to do to help others. For those of us in the healthcare field, we can’t help having the feeling of wanting more for those we serve, our elderly patients. We’d like to see our patients healthier. We’d love to see them thriving independently. For some we’d be elated to just see them at home with their families more and in the hospital less. Medicare would also be elated. According to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, an independent agency that advises Congress, Medicare spends more than $12 billion a year on “potentially preventable” repeat hospital admissions.
