Founded in 1871, Colorado Springs is Colorado's second largest city, with a county population in excess of half a million. At an altitude of 6,053 feet, the city is located approximately 60 miles south of Denver and 45 miles north of Pueblo on the I-25 corridor. Colorado Springs is situated at the foot of Pikes Peak (elevation 14,110 feet). In 1893, Katherine Lee Bates was so inspired by the view from on top of Pikes Peak, that she composed the lyrics to "America The Beautiful." Almost 300 days of sunshine annually.
