Carousels from the Philadelphia Toboggan Company (PTC) represent some of the finest examples of carousel art in America. PTC was founded in 1904 by Henry B. Auchy and Chester E. Albright, to â??build finer and better carousels and coasters.â? Auchy received a patent in 1909 for a particularly important innovation for carousels, the Auchy friction drive. It is a tribute to the early engineering skills at PTC that some of these drives are still in operation after nearly a hundred years or more of service. Carousels from PTC have pleased countless riders for more than a century and continue to do so. Auchy and Albright were among the rare few carousel builders who were not themselves carvers and thus looked to others for carving skills. The works of great wood carvers like Leo Zoller, brothers Daniel and Alfred Muller, Frank Carretta, John Zalar, Salvatore Cernigliaro, and David Lightfoot, among others, can still be found on many of the classic carousels from PTC.

By Jim Weaver Special to The Carousel News & Trader Founded in 1898 as a small trolley park in West Mifflin, Pennsylvania, just east of Pittsburgh, Kennywood Amusement Park was begun by the Monongahala Street Railway Company, a business controlled by steel baron and philanthropist Andrew Mellon.

Albright, used inventory purchased from the E. Joy Morris Company. PTC #1 first operated at Piney Beach in Hampton, VA. It later moved to Pine Island, Manchester, NH, where it was destroyed by fire on September 31, 1961.

We had our 100-year Anniversary Celebration for our Parker Carry-Us-All #118, and we are getting ready for the NCA (National Carousel Association) to come to town for their annual Carousel Convention to be held here September 25 - 29, 2013. Officially founded in Sandwich, MA, in 1973 (as the National Carousel Roundtable), 2013 also marks the 40th anniversary of the NCA.

By Dee Lynch Special to The Carousel News & Trader On Thursday, Oct. 5, 2007, thanks to John Caruso our fabulous tour guide, Vickie Sauffer and I had a â??Carousel Day in the Big Apple.â? We spent the morning at Sothebyâ??s Auction watching the sale of 11 of Charlotte Dingerâ??s carousel animals. Like a carousel, the sale had its ups and downs for the Dingers, but the three of us were thrilled to have had the experience of attending this fine auction.
