CCIH initiated a consultation of faith-based organizations to be held the day after the high-level Family Planning Summit organized by the UK Department of International Development and the Gates Foundation in London on July 11. CCIH Executive Director Ray Martin was invited to attend the summit by the organizers, highlighting the vital role of the faith community in promoting and providing health services across the globe. Leaders from around the world will be committing to expanding efforts to provide family planning information and services to those who are not presently reached.
Joel Weathers is a member of SIM, an interdenominational, global mission organization. He currently serves in the U.S. Headquarters in Charlotte, NC promoting and advocating for SIM's health-related ministries and personnel. He is Project Manager for a USAID grant for Family Planning at a SIM mission hospital in Angola and is building SIM’s engagement with government and secular donors for health and development work. Prior to his current role with SIM, Mr. Weathers served in Bangladesh from 2004 through 2009, working with SIM’s Community Development Project.
CCIH released the results of a survey conducted earlier this year of the capacity and needs of faith-based health facilities in Uganda in providing family planning services. The survey revealed that faith-based facility-based health facilities in Uganda are well positioned to take on additional family planning service provision, including both counseling and providing family planning methods.
