Behind the storybook images of farm animals are the harsh realities of “factory farms,” where pigs, veal calves, hens and rabbits are forced to live their entire lives in steel cages, cement stalls or crates barely larger then their own bodies. More than 162 million “food animals” are slaughtered every week in the US, and none dies a painless death. For livestock, from transport to stunning to hoisting to death is a journey filled with terror. Even less fortunate are the “downers,” sick or injured animals who are dragged to death or left to die where they fall. “We all love animals; why do we call some 'pets'and others 'dinner'?”
