The mission of Cedar Riverside Community School is to prepare children to become knowledgeable, responsible, and service-minded citizens. The academic program, in collaboration with neighborhood non-profit community organizations, is designed with this end in mind. Cedar Riverside Community School, founded in 1993, is an outcome-based charter school located in the Cedar Riverside Plaza housing complex. This location has had a powerful impact upon the school's evolution. As a result of its location, the school serves a population overwhelmingly from immigrant families, with a current enrollment of 108 students who come from homes where English is not the first language. To serve our students, our curriculum and strategies have evolved through the years to provide the students with a first class education and has essentially become a Limited English Program. Limited English proficiency however, is not the only hurdle in the students' education. Some of the more prevalent issues many of the students have to overcome in addition to learning English when they come to Cedar Riverside include interrupted schooling, immigration, culture shock, separation from family members, poverty, and trauma caused by war. These are significant obstacles to students, families, and staff when providing for each child's education and growth.
