Description

Started tasks serve well as a central resource control point and in providing common services for multi-address-space products. Subsystems offer a convenient way to initiate cross-address-space communications, and their ?I/O? capabilities provide a means of implementing ?pipes? for data transfer across address spaces using the standard sequential access methods.

Aside from the code, one of the most important contributions we can make to a project is the documentation and training we provide for the client's support staff. While we'll strive to deliver zero-defect programs, there will likely be issues that arise after project turnover. We believe the quality of these deliverables must be equally high, to ensure that the client's support staff is comfortable in taking responsibility for the new programs.

Most commercial mainframe products compete both on functionality and performance. On the performance side, concerns are typically in the areas of CPU, storage, I/O channel, and device utilization, as well as elapsed (?wall clock?) time. So, it follows that much of a product's performance is traceable to the ?I/O engine? it uses. While the standard access methods suitable for serving the generic case, significant performance gains can be realized by employing an I/O engine with a methodology tailored to a product's specific requirements. We have wide experience working with the lower-level I/O interfaces such as VSAM CI-Access, MM, EXCP and EXCPVR, and with direct interface to the I/O Supervisor (IOS) as an ?I/O Driver? (issuer of the STARTIO macro).

For development of medium-to-high-level components for mainframe environments, we are versed in Cobol, C, C++, Fortran, PL/1 and SAS. Of course, for low-level functions, the language tends to necessarily be Assembler or PL/X. We have extensive experience in building world-class products that integrate tightly with the operating system and exploit its features to deliver great functionality and performance.

In some instances, different implementation options can be envisioned, but the best choice isn't clear during the high-level or component design stages. This problem is often addressed by testing ideas through temporary, skeletal programs. We have a great deal of experience in this area, particularly in converging on the techniques that will yield the very best performance.
