Description
The purpose of this document is to summarize the current state-of-the-art in managed care for the elderly and to provide states with background information needed to launch their own initiatives to provide quality, cost effective care to the rapidly aging population. As you will see, attempts to truly coordinate primary, preventive, acute, and long term care have been limited, but the demonstrations that do exist show promise.
NASHP instituted a Strategic Partnership Program in 2014 to align with corporations who wish to invest in NASHP to support excellence in state health policy. Working together, this will ensure the maximum impact of NASHP's work as a non-profit and non-partisan organization supporting states as they reach across branches and agencies examining and creating solutions to critical health issues.
UnitedHealthcare Community & State is the largest health benefits company dedicated to providing diversified solutions to states that care for the economically disadvantaged, the medically underserved and those without benefit of employer-funded health care coverage.
Where some may see opportunities for improved delivery and coordination of care and cost savings, others may wonder about possible disincentives for providing the full array of needed services. For more vulnerable populations, such as children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN), the concerns can be heightened.
Since the Institute of Medicine called for a nationwide, mandatory reporting system to provide for the collection by state governments of standardized information about adverse medical events, much state activity has focused on the development and refinement of these systems. The information collected can help identify health system weaknesses, complement other state functions, and help safeguard health-care consumers.
