Center for Practical Bioethics

Description

The Center will provide a phone number for employees to make contact with a member of the Center staff who has experience in coaching and advocacy around healthcare decision-making. Our experience of taking calls over a quarter of a century is that people often start with “I don’t know exactly why I am calling you, but I am at my wit’s end and someone said you could help.” Our healthcare ‘system’ is often not very systematic and can be confusing and overwhelming, especially after a prolonged illness where both the patient and the family are exhausted.

Linda joined the staff of the Center for Practical Bioethics after serving on the board. She is now Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. The Center is a freestanding bioethics center dedicated to raising and responding to ethical issues in health and health care.

Dr. Pettett draws that conclusion from more than twenty years of experience in research bioethics. He was formerly the chair of the Pediatric Institutional Review Board at Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri, and was a member of its Research Council.

Myra was quick to recognize Helen’s passion and potential. “I honestly believe she thought I was smarter than I thought I was,” said Helen. “She always stretched me to the point where I was scared to death. ‘You can do this,’ she’d say, “dragging me all over the United States with my two bachelor’s degrees teaching people with MDs, PhDs, JDs! She, Rosemary and Hans are my three mentors.” One of Helen’s early projects for the Center was the Nursing Leadership Institute.

Sandy is a graduate of the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law, earning her J.D. in 1994 and is also Harvard-trained in the areas of mediation and negotiation. She has worked with families in crisis for approximately 25 years.
