History & Mission Hancock Rural Telephone Corporation was formed in November 1950 when five small companies in Hancock County joined together. Maxwell Telephone Company, McCordsville Telephone Company, Mohawk Telephone Company, New Eden Telephone Company, and the Willow Branch Telephone Company. The McCordsville Company was formed in 1895 when Loren Helms, who worked in a local telephone factory, strung a wire across the back fence from his mother's house to the home of his sister, installing the first phone in the community. Soon 3 neighbors joined the line and the company was in business. The other 4 companies were established in the period between 1900 and 1903. Each started as a community venture, with 12 to 25 lines.In order to better reflect the multiple aspects of telecommunication services it offers today, Hancock Rural Telephone Corporation changed its name to Hancock Telecom.Hancock Telecom currently provides over 8500 access lines in its territory. Hancock Telecom also has subsidiary companies including Hancock Communications - which provides competitive local telecommunication services to Wilkinson, Shirley, Fortville, and Greenfield; and Hancock Internet & Hancock Long Distance - offering service to surrounding areas and to Hancock Telecom and Hancock Communications customers.
