Description

Centrum is a 36-year-old nonprofit dedicated to serving artists of all ages and backgrounds through residential workshops, creative residencies, and public performances. Centrum and Fort Worden State Park were founded as a partnership between the Washington State Arts Commission and the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission. This partnership would blend the bounty of a spectacular natural setting with the invigoration of creative intellectual engagement, to provide rare opportunities for community learning, expansive thought, and artistic creation. Due to both the setting and the model of artist-based learning, Centrum has indeed been a life-changing force for thousands and thousands of individuals. In 2004 the board adopted a new mission statement that has at its core a demonstrable fact: Centrum promotes creative experiences that change lives. The board also recognized that an organization devoted to individual transformation must always be reinventing itself and attentive to emerging audiences and opportunities. A primary challenge moving forward is balancing this imperative to change with the need to honor the enormous reservoirs of goodwill in communities attached to Centrum that are deeply vested in status quo.
