Description
Back to School Message from the Art Teacher! Dear CCS Parents and Guardians, I am truly excited to begin a new year of creativity and creation with Challenge Charter School students. My goals as an art teacher go beyond teaching them the basics of art. I want the students to learn skills that will help them brainstorm and generate unique ideas, to think creatively and critically. Students will be guided on how to “think like an artist”: plan, experiment, reflect and adjust, and create. Henri Matisse said, “Creativity takes courage.” This is why I want to create an environment where the students feel comfortable taking risks with their ideas, and not feel ashamed of “mistakes,” but rather reflect, and learn from them. Artistic talent can take a child so far, but it is these skills that make for success in all areas of life, and all projects embarked upon. It is really important that all students come to art ready to work because there is so much to learn! A very fun aspect of art-making is using different media, and sometimes the materials can be messy. I do what I can to ensure that the mess stays contained, but every so often, mess happens. Since all students will be wearing beautiful new uniforms this year, I want to invite you to send a plain, old shirt or tee to school with your child that they may wear as a smock in class. It will be their responsibility to keep it in their school bags and bring it to art. I will also have a collection of old shirts that are available for those particularly messy art days. Many household items, some that people normally throw away, can be used in art making. I may request students bring a particular item from home (such as a plastic water bottle) for a particular project (such as creating a paper mache vase). Donations are gladly accepted at all times. A few great art items include paper towel rolls, small plastic containers with lids, easy to cut fabric or felt, aluminum foil, and the list goes on. If you do have items to donate, kindly clean completely before sending to school. Once again, I will work on putting student artwork on the online gallery, www.Artsonia.com , so that you may share your child’s creativity with family and friends through the internet. If you ever have questions about this or any other aspect of art class, feel free to reach me through the school’s main phone or email me. Continue to check the Challenge Charter School website for updates and news in ART! Thank you for your time and support and here’s to another year full of imagination!
