Merle was inducted into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame at a ceremony held March 11, 2004. Founded in 1985, the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame is dedicated to educating the Colorado community about women who have made significant and enduring contributions to their fields of endeavor, elevated the status of women, opened new frontiers for women and society and inspired others. Selected because of her distinguished career as a businesswoman and philanthropist, Merle joins an extraordinary group of women.

(*PDF) is based on Chambers Family Fund’s experience championing women’s funds in Wyoming, Montana and Oklahoma. This publication is designed to share what we have learned, to provide successful strategies to make such partnerships work and to offer recommendations based on our experience. It emphasizes the importance of building an endowment to provide a permanent source of grantmaking revenue for responding to the needs of women and girls.

As a family foundation committed to long-term economic opportunity and social justice, our grantmaking has intentionally focused on upstream solutions for more than fifteen years. Supporting systemic change requires a deeper engagement with our not-for-profit partners and, at times, a longer timeframe for implementation. However, we know that investing in policy change or improving a system will not only help people today, but the whole stream of people who will follow.

The year also provided additional growth opportunities for the women’s funds created and supported by Chambers Family Fund. We continue to provide general support to three statewide women’s funds and matching funds for endowment growth at the Fargo-Morehead and Grand Forks women’s funds in North Dakota.

Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art continues to be a priority and major focus of Chambers Family Fund’s grantmaking. We provide ongoing general operating support to this unique nationally recognized museum. In 2008, Kirkland Museum had an impressive increase in visitors and a fortuitous opportunity to purchase property located directly across from the museum. We made a capital grant for the purchase of the property that includes a building and a parking lot with additional parking spaces for guests.
