Description
The short answer is “everything.” For those of us in the search business, we realize that our industry is changing in ways we couldn’t see or even imagine 3 or 4 years ago. For boards and hiring executives who haven’t yet incorporated their personal experiences and company positions on the use of social media into their talent development and hiring processes, you will limit your ability to attract the best talent until you do so, and worse, your best people are looking at companies who have already done so.
The company’s board was relatively inexperienced in the U.S. The founders and team were accustomed to organizations that were much more hierarchical in nature, where a CEO had ultimate authority and was rarely challenged. The founders and board ended up hiring as CEO a person with absolutely no experience in middleware or enterprise software, and whose previous experience in the technology space was gained in senior positions at consumer oriented dot-com companies.
“We worked with Jean Su and Tony Scott of ChampionScott Partners on a CEO search for a company in the silicon design services space. The company has offices in Shanghai, Taipei and Silicon Valley, and is extending into Japan. The CEO had to be able to speak Chinese fluently, have management experience in Taiwan or China, and extensive experience in a relevant industry sector. Candidates for the role could be generated from China or Taiwan directly, or from U.S.-based individuals with background, connections and experience in China.
For almost thirty years Self Help Africa has worked with rural communities to help them improve their farms and their livelihoods. Our mission is to empower rural Africa to achieve economic independence — and on a continent where up to 75% of people rely on small-scale agriculture for their survival, we believe that it is only by tackling the challenges faced by rural farming communities that real and sustained economic progress can be made across sub-Saharan Africa.
So, to be successful in recruiting the brightest, most talented candidates who have the experience your company needs to be successful, you need to take recruiting very seriously – as seriously or more so as if you are trying to raise funding. Spend time to make sure that your story is clear, crisp, and explains why others should share your passion from a product/service point of view – and the path that leads to financial success for the company.
