In 1999, after having worked for many years in the software, computer and electrical Patent and Intellectual Property (IP) Law groups at two of the largest IP law firms in New England, Barry Chapin started a patent and IP law firm that minimizes drawbacks common to many large firms.

Prior to entering the legal field, Mike worked in engineering for over 15 years. With a strong background in computer and electronics-related technologies, he worked as a software and computer engineer for several companies in the computer and telecommunication fields. He has experience developing firmware for embedded systems, working with communication protocols, developing software for performance analysis of computer systems, and developing diagnostic software for testing/verifying computer hardware. His broad and in-depth technical background enables Mike to quickly grasp new technologies.

Licensing allows an owner of Intellectual Property (IP) to receive revenue from the IP by granting permission for others to use rights in the IP in exchange for compensation. Chapin Intellectual Property Law understands the practical world of high technology and its commercial exploitation, and has extensive experience and expertise in the negotiation and preparation of intellectual property licenses and technological agreements.

Christopher Lutz is a Partner at Chapin Intellectual Property Law, LLC, with significant experience in both patent law and engineering. Chris has over 15 years of experience practicing in patent law. Prior to joining the firm, Chris worked for several years at two large Boston area intellectual property law firms where he practiced patent drafting and prosecution with a particular focus in the areas of computers systems, software, electronics, mechanical devices and systems, and telecommunications.

Prior to entering the legal field, Paul worked as an electrical design engineer for several companies. He has extensive practical engineering work experience in design, development and testing of analog and digital electronics and in software development. While at United Technologies (UTC) Hamilton Standard, Paul was involved in the design and development of fault tolerant, redundant engine control systems for commercial aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing and Airbus.
