American souvenir cards encompass those scenic photo souvenir decks distributed in the U.S. and manufactured primarily by U.S. card manufacturers. Like most souvenir decks, these decks were sold primarily on trains or at vacation destinations. Out of all the souvenir deck categories, the American decks encompass many of the oldest souvenir decks produced, starting in 1894 and continuing through the 1950's. These decks were most prevalent from the early 1900's through the 1930's, however. Most of the American souvenir decks focus on images from specific regions. There are decks for most states and some states had a number of different decks produced from different card manufacturers. For example, you can find a number of different souvenir decks for California, New York, or Washington D.C., but only a single deck for Montana, or Vermont. Some American souvenir decks focused on larger, multi-state regions like "The Southwest," but this was less common. The subject matter of the photos was generally outdoor scenery, buildings and landmarks that someone traveling might want to remember.
