Description

Having been in the oil patch for more than 20 years before private practice, I am amazed at the hubris nature of some of our supposed executive leadership; especially in the Oil Patch. Case in point – We have all worked in an environment or for companies where you see crap float to the top of the heap. If you are familiar with “Peter Principal” this analogy only reinforces the notion that you have people that reach their level of competency and then are given steroids to further bolster their incompetence, as you see hordes of executives from the C-Suite commit verbal Hara-kiri on the television and in interviews. At the top of that list “This Week” in the wake of the announcement that Tony Hayward is being set aside – quietly – the powers that be (AKA the Board, Investors, and under writers) have appointed Bob Dudley – was appointed president and chief executive of the newly created Gulf Coast Restoration Organization , effective immediately, and report to Hayward. OK – I have images of several foxes watching the chicken coup. Maybe Bob will be a bit more diplomatic in the face of the press, but having seen some pretty arrogant oil execs, it is doubtful that BP will rush to help the Coastal Residents, and our Government is not taking the type of action that would solicit rants from the French. Here’s my point – Just imagine if the US were involved in some international incident in the former Soviet Union – in the 70 and 80’s when Texaco was in Moscow, hundreds of mini computers and files were seized by the government, and the company was kicked out until they paid a processing fine for bringing in technology from outside the country. Forget that the technology was brought in by the partner, oh yeah, the Soviets Union. This form of Nationalization was a common practice, and the offending company had to buy back in to the region to play. Now back to Tony…Ignoring the comments that Hayward — who shocked Gulf residents when he said “I’d like my life back” and weeks later went yachting — or this past Tuesday when Hayward ducked out of a previously announced commitment to speak at an oil industry conference in London. We know that BP, reportedly one of the worst environmental offenders in the world is going to make things right – this can’t be lip services. But do you think that the US will do anything to impact the share holders of BP, like seizing their assets to clean up the spill – figure out a way to stop the leaks, or improve the living conditions, as well as lively hood of those people that make their living off the gulf, um… probably not. I guess the Brits’ feel that it would be better to have a good old Mississippi boy from the gulf region, interact with the Government. It definitely makes better press right of the bat – I think that it will work. Because we all know that Public Officials like our new US Based CEO all have our best interest at heart, right? Wrong – the Obama administration tried to sort out how to resurrect a six-month moratorium on new deepwater drilling that was struck down by a federal judge a day earlier. U.S.
