Description
The CICBC is a not-for-profit organization originally formed in 1971 by St. John's Hospital and Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, Illinois to provide the blood needs of their hospitals, and now 19 hospitals in central and southwestern Illinois. This involves blood collections (offices in Springfield and Edwardsville, Illinois) and through the hundreds of Bloodmobile drives held throughout the area. Donor recruiters work with area organizations to schedule blood drives and to communicate with existing blood donors to meet routine blood needs through regular blood donations. Blood drive coordinators are special people who volunteer their time in their organization or community to work with CICBC staff to sign up blood donors and coordinate the blood drives. Public relations staff works with donor recruiters, community leaders, news media, partner hospitals, blood donors, blood drive sponsors and others to inform and educate about the need to donate blood. Phlebotomists are highly trained professionals who screen blood donors, provide mini-physicals and take blood donations. The actual time in the chair to donate blood is 5-10 minutes. Lab specialists process the blood for 14 tests conducted by a licensed laboratory to check for diseases and viruses to ensure a safe and reliable blood supply.
