Cinetyp began in Switzerland in 1937, a country with four official languages. The founders of Cinetyp had previously created "inter-titles," the title cards used in silent movies. Inter-titles appeared between the filmed action, and could be easily substituted when translating the film to any language. With the advent of the "talkies," subtitles -- text shown over the action -- were created so that the translation could appear at the same time the actors spoke. Cinetyp quickly became a leader in the new technology of subtitles for sound motion pictures. Coming to America... Cinetyp's presence in the U.S. began in 1980. Over the past two and a half decades, the company has subtitled more than 4,500 films. Cinetyp's Hollywood lab has grown into a large, hi-tech operation, located in the heart of the Los Angeles entertainment industry.
