In 1998, we were three materials research and development engineers with over 60 years of combined experience developing high-performance materials. We had studied the plastics processing industry and knew there was work to be done. We aimed to enhance the properties of syntactic foam for use as a plug material, and give users a new set of tools to improve their process. We spoke with everyone we could. Dove into the issues. Understood limitations. And discovered solutions.

Rather than discussing our newest products, CMT chose to discuss how new techniques developed for use with new and existing syntactic foam materialsfor thermoforming can offer immediate and sustained cost savings through light weighting, product quality improvements and greater tool repeatability. These techniques have also revealed how thermoformers can reduce or eliminate plug scratching when working with high transparency application requirements and improve material distribution on today’s toughest deep draw challenges.

According to the panel, the trends in heating technology seem to be application-specific. The energy retained by ceramic elements provides an advantage over quartz, though this point might be challenged by manufacturers of quartz panels. Halogen heaters were discussed and the panel identified certain advantages for specific applications but they are not used in as many environments as ceramic or quartz panels. The color of the sheet can influence the efficacy of the halogen heaters.
