Coating Place was founded in 1976 by Harlan Hall and Ralph Pondell who purchased the intellectual property and prototype equipment from the University of Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation. Dr. Dale Wurster worked within the foundation while developing this coating technology. No other contract research company offers a comparable record of bringing microencapsulated pharmaceutical products to commercial viability as quickly and efficiently as Coating Place.

Pharmaceutical ion-exchange resins can be used in formulations to provide taste-masking, controlled release, tablet disintegration, and improved stability of active pharmaceutical ingredients. Coating Place, Inc. has more than 30 years of experience developing and manufacturing controlled release pharmaceutical products using ion-exchange technology including both liquid and solid dosage forms. Coating Place can provide customized formulations to achieve a wide range of release profiles or other desired improvements to pharmaceutical product stability, taste, or performance.

Mithridion is engaged in clinical trials of one compound that affects response to the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and has "two other drug candidates invented by our people in Wisconsin." No matter which compound succeeds, he says, "We were founded in Madison to take advantage of an invention at UW-Madison. WARF is an investor, and most of our people are graduates of UW-Madison.

Pharmaceutical, nutraceutical, nutritional, and other active materials typically have an objectionable taste which creates challenges for some forms of oral delivery. If it is confined to a tablet or capsule that is swallowed whole, the material can pass the taste buds without significant detection. When the material is formulated as a chewable tablet, a fast-dissolve lozenge or film, solution or suspension, objectionable taste is often the primary cause of patient non-compliance with a dosing requirement.
