Description

Colby, the original county seat of Thomas County, was laid out in 1885. The town was named after J.R. Colby, one of the oldest settlers in the county. The original post office, established in 1882 was near the geographical center of Thomas County. It was decided that the best place to build the town was on railroad land provisions that had slope enough for drainage and availability for water. This new location was three miles north of the original Post office and was finally secured from the railroad in March of 1885. Early in the month of 1885, the Colby Town Company received the Town Charter from the office of the Secretary of State. Colby was now official, but it?s founder J.R. left in 1886.
