Description

Used by kings and noblemen from across Europe from the 12th to 18th centuries, the originals of these replicas have in modern days found their way to museums worldwide. During a time when flatware was not commonly used and food was eaten by hand, the perimeters of the glass were purposefully placed with hobnails of different shapes to provide a grip for greasy fingers. Because during that period furnaces were heated with wood and not hot enough to melt the glass perfectly, a forest green tint characterized the glass pieces. Old master glassmakers did however, succeed in creating fragile looking and elegant items from this glass. Requiring a perfect mastery of glass making techniques, this type of glass making proves difficult for those without the sophisticated skills to utilize modern technologies as well as old production methods.
