The Colorado Sheep Industry contributes 96 million dollars annually to Colorado's cash farm receipts. Colorado is the 5th largest sheep and lamb producer in the United States. Producing approximately 365,000 sheep and lambs per year. The Colorado Wool Industry produces more than 3 million pounds of wool annually. This wool is used to make clothing, fabric, carpet, insulation and baseballs. Across Colorado 1,900 sheep farms and ranches are an integral part of the states agricultural and recreational industries. Not only does the Colorado Sheep Industry contribute to agricultural income for the state, it is also vital in keeping our federal, state and private lands healthy. Sheep are used to balance the ecology of Colorado's diverse geography. Sheep grazing is used as a "tool" to control the spread of noxious weeds, increase conifer growth in the forests and enhance wildlife habitats.
