The Conservatory students and alumni were invited to open the KRCC ‘Blues Under the Bridge’ Festival in Downtown Colorado Springs. Brendon Searle, David Musante, James Swan, David Siegel, Kenny Martinez and Devin Malloy wowed the crowd with blues and jazz favorites. CSC NEWS UPDATE August 2010 Summer 2010 has been a whirlwind of activity! After a strong finish to the spring semester with an artful production of “Down in the Valley” by Kurt Weill, the students embarked on a journey un paralleled to now. The Summer began with a week long camp session. Students participated in dance, piano, theater, strings, guitar, composition and art for seven full hours a day through the entire week. The week culminated in a performance project that included original monologues created by the students. Consensus was that more weeks should be offered throughout the summer and open to even younger students! We will plan on that for next summer. While that was going on another entirely different group was rehearsing our production of “Seussical, the Musical”. Billie McBride once again directed the students in what turned out to be a fantastic show. The cast included Stephen Ocshner as Horton (CSC alumni ’06) who has just graduated from Oklahoma City University. Enrolled students CC Wells, Joelle Sostheim, David Musante, Mark Autry, Graham Gale, Silas Carter and Scott Autry played some of the principal roles along with a cast of nearly a dozen fellow students. CSC faculty members Colin Gregory and Linda Weise joined the students as well as an all alumni pit that included Becca and David Seigel, Devin Malloy and Jacob Eichengreen. The sold out performances took place at the UCCS Dusty Loo Bon Vivant Theater. The students went right into our seventh annual summer performing arts intensive with Central City Opera. Fourteen fabulous students from across Colorado and around New York City endured long days of study, performance and collaboration. They rehearsed and performed an incredible scenes program based on “Through a Child’s Eyes” that included scenes from ‘Romeo and Juliet’ and the new musical “Thirteen” to name just a few. They also worked together and wrote an original opera about the life of Antoinette Perry, a long time Colorado resident whom the Tony Awards are named after. All this in just nine short days here at UCCS then off to Central City. There, the students enjoyed watching all three productions on the main stage; “Madame Butterfly”, “Orpheus in the Underworld” and “Three Decembers”. All the productions were incredible! The students participated in fight classes, movement classes, diction and audition classes as well as Master Class with Maestro Baril. We stayed at the Ameristar Hotel in Blackhawk which was a first for the Conservatory, but a risk happily taken. The accommodations were great and best of all was the pool on the 34th floor; so nice after a long day of rehearsals and classes.. Several of the students then came back to Colorado Springs just to jump into a production of “Merry Wives of Windsor” with our partners at UCCS Theatreworks. That production runs to the very end of August. It’s been a FULL summer!
