Columbus Street Inn

Description

Columbus Street Inn Bed & Breakfast is an Alabama Country Inn, which is located in what is considered to be one of the oldest existing structures in the small, northwest town of Fayette in Fayette County, AL. The original house was built in 1870 by John Buford Sanford and his wife Margaret Susan Robertson. Mr. Sanford, who fought in the Civil War, was also known as "Colonel Sanford," even though he was only a private in Company B of the 10th Alabama Infantry. He saw action at Bull Run, Gettysburg, Antietam, and many more of the major battles of the War. Colonel Sanford also practiced law in Fayette, along with his partner, Allen Smith. He decided to enter politics in the footsteps of Mr. Smith, who was elected Probate Judge of Fayette County. Colonel Sanford was elected to the Alabama Legislature. He also was selected by the citizens of Fayetteville. as Fayette was once called, to be their mayor. Over the years, the house has been home to many Fayette families. It was renovated, "modernized," and opened to the public as Columbus Street Inn in 1992, and has existed as such since then. Present owners Ben and Mary purchased the historic southern bed and breakfast in November of 2005. Immediate changes were owner occupancy, insuring 24 hour hospitality and assistance, and Mary's hot, gourmet breakfasts each morning. The Hightowers hope to keep the heritage of the structure intact while making improvements to the common areas and the inn's four guestrooms that will enhance the stay of all their guests Columbus Street Inn is proud to be an inspected and approved member of the Bed and Breakfast Association of Alabama and the Alabama HospitalityAssociation.
