Brian Farragher, LMSW, MBA - Brian is the Executive VP / COO of the Andrus Children's Center located in Yonkers, NY. Brian has worked in the field of childhood mental health for over 25 years & during the past 9 years has worked closely with Dr. Sandra Bloom and the staff at Andrus to implement the Sanctuary Model, a trauma informed system of care. Five years ago Andrus developed the Sanctuary Institute, which offers training and consultation to other organizations seeking to implement the model.

The “shadow organization” is the organization that grows up informally alongside or perhaps more accurately, within the overt organization to provide services and benefits not provided by the overt organization. These arrangements can parallel, complement or even replace formal organization structures and processes [22]. Of all the explanations of conflict in organizations, it is these shadowy, largely unconscious sources of conflict that are likely to be the most problematic in caregiving organizations.

In 1813, Samuel Tuke, grandson of William, published a book titled Description of the Retreat, an institution near York for insane persons of the Society of Friends. In his book, he gave an account of “Moral Treatment". Physical coercion and restraint were deplored and were replaced with relationships with attendants who were carefully selected to offer inmates guidance and treat them humanely. Patients were to be treated with respect, as adults, not as children, and were to be urged in the direction of self-restraint and self-control [2]. The violent were separated from the nonviolent.

Finally, we recognize that the staff members in most mental health and social service environments are stressed, frequently demoralized, frustrated, and overburdened. Many of the direct line staff - and in many cases the professionally trained staff - have little if any experience in running groups and may be intimidated by the prospect of using a group format.

The S.E.L.F Psychoeducational Group Curriculum is designed to provide clients – and staff – with an easy-to-use and coherent cognitive framework that can create a change momentum. Because it is a model that is “round” not square, circular, not stepped, it provides a logical framework for movement.
