The Compeer Program originated in Rochester, NY, in 1973 and has been known as Compeer, Incorporated since 1977. There have been over 25,000 Compeer one-to-one matches during this time, referrals coming from hundreds of therapists, agencies, and private practices. Compeer was chosen as a model program by the National Institute of Mental Health in 1982; and in 1983 the New York State program received a grant to encourage the development of similar programs throughout the nation. Currently, there are over 115 programs in the International Affiliation of Compeer Programs (IACP) in the United States, Australia, and Canada. Compeer of Lebanon County is the newest of fifteen Compeer programs in Pennsylvania. Compeer is regarded as an adjunct to therapy. A Compeer friend helps to bridge the gap between institutional treatment and community-based services. More than 90% of all therapists, case managers, and people in recovery from a mental illness are satisfied with the services that Compeer provides. Compeer works in the community to reduce hospitalizations, reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, and enhance public understanding and acceptance of people with a mental illness. Compeer clients are referred to the program by a mental health professional. Some live independently or with a family member, others live in a supervised environment such as a personal care home or supported-housing environment. Compeer volunteers represent all segments of society. Some volunteers may be professionals; others may be mental health consumers. Altruism is the common denominator. Volunteer applicants are carefully screened to assure their motivation and suitability as either Compeer Callers or one-to-one Compeer "buddies".
