Description

Honda began in 1946 as the Honda Technical Research Institute, building engines and tools. The name was changed to Honda Motor Company in 1948. American Honda Motor Company was established in 1959, selling motorcycles in Los Angeles.

Founded in 1920 as a cork manufacturer, Mazda now sells cars and trucks in more than 120 countries. In 1970 Mazda entered the U.S. market, and today more than one-third of Mazda vehicles sold in the U.S. are produced there. Earning a strong reputation on its rotary-engine vehicles, Mazda introduced the world's only rotary-engine sports car in 2003: the 2004 RX-8. The Ford Motor Company owns about one-third of Mazda.

Saturn was established as a subsidiary of General Motors in January 1985. The Saturn concept began in 1982 in response to increasing import competition and an adversarial relationship between union and management. From the start, the company had clear aims to earn loyalty through commitment to customers. The first production Saturn came off the assembly line in 1990. The "Different Kind of Company" produces vehicles at its 4.6-million-square-foot manufacturing and assembly site in Spring Hill, Tenn.

Jaguar was founded in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company of Blackpool, England. The name was changed to SS Jaguar in 1935, then to simply Jaguar after WWII. Jaguar was one of the first British car companies to export to North America, and in 1954 the company set up its own distribution in New York. Jaguar became a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company in 1989 and is part of Ford's Premier Automotive Group, which includes Aston Martin, Land Rover and Volvo.

Volkswagen of America is a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG and was founded in 1955—six years after Volkswagen's popular Beetle showed up on U.S. shores. Since that first Beetle was sold, more than ten million VWs have been sold in the U.S. Volkswagen of America is the top-selling European automobile importer in the U.S., and Volkswagen AG also owns Audi, Bentley Motors and Bugatti, among others.
