Today, CDI and MC work together to provide an encouraging, positive and challenging environment to MC’s 1,000+ students ages 18-21. Students come from all 5 boroughs and more than 60 countries and speak dozens of different languages. Students work extraordinarily hard to earn enough credits to receive a Regents diploma, usually within just 2-3 years. Most students attend high school while juggling full- or part-time jobs and other adult responsibilities, like taking care of family and children.
In September 2011, CDI and MC launched a partnership with the 1,800-student The High School for Health Professions and Human Services (HPHS), located on 15th Street. CDI and MC are partnering with HPHS to offer their students the same kind of intensive, individualized college services that have helped MC students succeed for over 20 years.
With a dedicated staff of college advisors, CDI has developed a college culture that begins from a students first day high school. We have found that students who are engaged in planning their futures while in high school, are more successful once they’ve graduated. CDI offers college workshops to students and family and provides advisement to make sure that each student gets information about college opportunities. We provide one-on-one support at every step of the college exploration process, from writing admissions essays, SAT-prep, college visits and help with applications.
We provide immigration and legal information to over 200 MC students and their families each year, and ensure that they get reliable legal information at no cost. The Clinic provides individualized help and referrals to our partners at The Door and The Legal Aid Society who provide assessment and representation for eligible cases. Because of our diverse student population, we keep up-to-date on issues specific to various ethnic communities in the city. We also provide students with medical referrals and health education. About 1 in 4 young adults ages 18- to 25-year-olds are not insured.
Our solution CDI partners with high schools to provide funding and services beyond the capacity of public school budgets.
