In the past, I have run a 60-bed Dementia community in Lynnwood, Washington. For over 14 years, I sold medical supplies to doctors and hospitals. Over the last eight years, I have worked as a senior housing specialist and advocate for the elderly, elevating the senior care industry with new legistlation in the State of Washington and co-founding Concierge Care Advisors.

The Seattle Times front page story of June 8, 2012 details, once again, the failure of Washington State’s Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) to effectively monitor and take action on the Adult Family Homes found to be in violation of safety and health standards. The story is a follow-up to the award-winning January – December 2010 Seattle Times investigative journalism series Seniors for Sale . The series examined abuse, neglect and deaths in hundreds of Adult Family Homes due to the failure of DSHS. The series also exposed weaknesses in the unregulated placement and referral industry in Bed Brokers . The Kirkland case involved the death of Jean Rudolph, a former nursing educator with Alzheimer’s disease. Mrs. Rudolph died from untreated bed sores that penetrated to her bones, and toxins invading her organs. As reported in the Times , “The state of Washington harbored a secret. Investigators had cited Houghton Lakeview 33 times for inadequate care and substandard conditions.
