Music Up Close and Personal An In-House Concert is a live musical performance presented in a personal setting like one's Home, House of Worship, Community Center, or similar venue. The idea seems unusual simply because it's seldom done that way anymore. If a person hears live music in concert it is usually done in a theatre with a stage, lighting, sound system, large audience etc. We have forgotten that throughout most of history live music was normally heard in an intimate setting with friends and family. And so, as with most things, we have gone 180 degrees back to where we started. What used to be unique, going out to a theatre, is now the norm for live concerts and what was the norm, hearing live music in "your home", is now very unique. So the old way is better? NO! Not at all. Concerts in theatres are wonderful for many types of music. A symphony orchestra, for example, really does not work in one's living room. But the idea of sitting in your home with friends and intimately being part of a virtuoso musical performance has been all but lost. Besides being able to hear better than most theatre settings, there are other very real advantages to an intimate live musical performance. One is the visual advantage. In a large concert hall, no matter how good the performer sounds, one cannot really see the action. Watching the performer's playing technique is as exciting as hearing the music and there is a personal connection in intimate settings between the artist and listener that is all but lost in most large venues. Provide a venue: First, you must provide a venue that is appropriate for the event. Most any setting that is appropriate for a party or get together with friends and family is appropriate for an In-House Concert. Informality is good. No need for fancy seating or other worries unless that is your preference and normal way of doing things. Provide refreshments: This is entirely up to you. In our opinion, the simpler the better but again that is your call depending on your experience and style. Pot-luck is a very effective approach. Control distractions: This being a musical event, it is appropriate to control distractions and noise levels. During the performance, televisions, stereos, unrelated conversations, children, pets etc. should be appropriately controlled. This may seem obvious, but we live in a culture that is so used to distractions that people have learned to "tune out" most of what they see and hear and are often unaware that there is an event taking place in which they are supposed to take part by being an active and participating audience. One possible solution to controlling distractions is to provide an area, removed from the performance, where people can go to eat or socialize if that is there preference.
