Description

CNG Director of Sales Jeffrey Arbour co-lectures the Communications 410 class at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana on training and development Michelle Shumate (Professor) was kind enough to allot me the time to talk with those who will be joining the workforce in the upcoming months. Converging Networks Group takes pride in mentoring the youth of our nation, the future leaders, those that will carry our fortunes and burdens. When I spoke with Michelle on the phone we touched on many topics that her course addresses, which are dead in line with real world learning. Topics of today are not just touched upon or covered broadly, rather they are aligned with a methodic approach to addressing business planning and bridging the gap technology presents. Presentation.ppt The PowerPoint slides attached were used for two purposes: 1) Keep a clear agenda to not stray from the topic at hand 2) Reiterate one last time that slides are supplemental to the discussion The training and development focus was toward end user adoption and how to approach the multitude of philosophical differences people commonly share. We first discussed a sample approach that generally adapts in both small and large organizations. The simple starting point of being disciplined in determining the needs of the organization or individual that you are working with. Once you have those needs, development of a training strategy starts. The key when creating any document/plan that has a scope is to isolate “creep”. Almost every initiative requires change and adaptation, the challenge is to create that environment without impacting time frames and delivering positive results. In the flow diagram “Objectives” are derived from “Needs/Goals”, however are positioned as a buffer to the end product (e.g. Training Model). From there the standard process of identification, design, development, and integration pursue. In any scenario when you have the opportunity to have open conversation with a different generation, creative thinkers, those who carry such enthusiasm with them as the future approaches. Fear coinciding with drive and ambition, it is a sight to see in all cases. In order to spark more discussion we created some small groups of 2 people. Each group was given 30 seconds to create a question surrounding the topic and identify who would present it. This was a way of creating more discussion points focused around topics of interest, identify any misconceptions about the work place, and also to teach teamwork. For the most part the questions were very specific and relevant to what they all have to face moving toward graduation. The one thing we discussed further is that in any training and development scenario, creating a mindset of cooperation is key. Those who learn/adapt quickly are many times your biggest asset as a trainer, but can also be a hindrance to the overall training model. Finally we discussed risk acceptance, which is something that I have put together and utilized in my professional career. The second to the last slide shows a mock up on how clarity of vision coincide with rick acceptance.
