Description
The John H. Stroger, Jr. Cook County Hospital is a world-renowned academic medical center located in Chicago, Illinois. The Stroger Cook County Hospital Emergency Department is one of the world's largest and busiest emergency departments. We serve over 130,000 adult, 30,000 children and 4,500 major trauma patients per year. The Department of Emergency Medicine at Stroger Cook County Hospital is affiliated with Rush Medical College. Rush Medical School is located in close proximity to Stroger Cook County Hospital. Dr. Jeffrey Schaider is the Emergency Medicine Department Chairman at Stroger Cook County Hospital; while Dr. Robert Simon serves as the Executive Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Stroger Cook County Hospital and Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Rush Medical College. The new 480 bed hospital opened in December 2002 with a nearly flawless, historical move. The new hospital is located adjacent to the old building. The new emergency department is twice the square footage of the previous emergency department. Radiology, CT and angiography are adjacent to the ED. The new 25 bed observation unit includes advanced cardiac diagnostic capabilities and is a separate unit located within the emergency department. The Emergency Medicine Residency Program is the largest in the United States with 54 emergency medicine residents in a PGY II, III, IV program structure and 26 full time faculty.
