In the 1960's, Houston was the focal point of the great drive by the United States to achieve John F. Kennedy's goal of reaching the moon before the end of the decade. NASA's location in Houston made the area a center for new technologies created to support the "Space Race". A major area of research at the time was the development of light-weight non-metallic materials to serve where previously only metals were employed. These innovative materials reduced the thrust necessary to place an object in orbit.
