Working with copper has developed into a passion that has lasted for near fifteen years. David has learned many traditional techniques and developed many of his own. Teaching those ideas and methods to others seems only natural. Now, with several classes already completed, is appears to be a continuing adventure and one that comes easily to him. Students leave with new knowledge and a "can do” attitude which further inspires us to continue to make this a part of the Copper Gardens agenda. The goal in class is to have a new student, no matter their background, leave at the end of the day with a finished product to be proud of. It must, necessarily, be a modest project; however, it will embody most of the fundamentals that will be needed for all future and more complex projects. A student needs to bring only enthusiasm and a desire to learn to the class. The entire shop is available to them and certain tools will be a part of their packet to take home. It is a great thrill for both the teacher and the students to begin with raw materials and end up hours later with a finished project. Once this first session is completed, David will support and help the burgeoning new copper worker in every way he can in the future. One of the greatest assets in attending the Copper Gardens teaching sessions is learning not only which tools you will need, but also knowing about suppliers of materials and special tools that make the process possible. A frequently asked question is about color. How do we get copper to turn green and all the other tones for which it is known? In class you will learn that the use of premixed chemicals is David's choice. The minutia in chemistry that some delve into and even enjoy is not an area that he chooses to spend time on. David feels it is vastly more important to learn the shaping, forming and joining of copper than to spend a lot of time being a chemist. Still, even using "over-the-counter” materials has its own special requirements and many of those details will be covered in class. You can be assured that a wealth of knowledge will be at your disposal. You will know, by spending a day in a class, if you are a candidate to go further into copper work. Most do and it is easy to understand, because it is fun, rewarding and keeps you sharp. To sign up for the next class, use the link provided below. Mind you, only six per class session. Our shop seems large until more than that get to working at the same time. Each student gains much from direct interaction with the instructor.
