Corey Lynn Calter is one of the fastest rising stars of the Los Angeles fashion community. She developed her aesthetic, a postmodern mix of elegant and funky clothing, at an early age in her native Philadelphia. There she learned about sewing and fit from her grandfather, a skilled Italian tailor, and combined this talent with a knowledge of color and textiles learned from her mother, a successful interior designer. Calter moved to New York City and attended the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she was the recipient of their Sportswear Design Award. After graduation, she immediately embarked on her career working as a costumer for performances like the Joffrey Ballet, and Broadway productions such as Phantom of the Opera and Guys and Dolls. Her original vision began to emerge while creating specialty pieces for the urban-punk mecca House of Field during the famed boutique's 1980's heyday. A few years later, Calter moved to San Francisco to work for the San Francisco Opera. She became increasing interested in corsetry and because of which, began her first small business called Milkmade Corsets. Milkmade's designs became an instant success with local high-end retailers. In 1996, Corey moved to Los Angeles to expand her line and gain access to a wider fashion community.
